Nilton Freitas, Madeira surf guide

Coached by a competitor. Built on the island's edge.

Madeira Surf Progress is led by Nilton Freitas — competitive surfer, trained under high-level coaches, born and raised on the volcanic coastline he now coaches on. Years on the Portuguese national circuit taught him how to read waves at speed; years of technical training taught him how to teach what he learned.

The brand exists because Nilton saw a gap. Madeira is one of Europe's most serious surf destinations, but most visiting surfers spend their week guessing the forecast, surfing the wrong spot for the day, or stuck in group lessons that don't move them forward. Madeira Surf Progress is built around the opposite: the right spot for the conditions, the right wave for your level, structured technical feedback every session.

Whether you're standing up for the first time at Machico or stepping onto Jardim do Mar's point for the first serious right-hander of your life, the methodology is the same — read the day, pick the wave, refine the technique, ride forward. No shortcuts. Real progression.

  • Jardim do Mar

A long, fast right-hander down a basalt boulder beach. World-class on a clean NW–W swell, and one of the most photogenic point breaks in Europe.

    Advanced
  • Paul do Mar

The heavier sibling of Jardim. Powerful left and right peaks under dramatic cliffs — short, hollow, and not for everyone. Best on solid swells with a forgiving forecast.

    Advanced
  • Ponta Pequena

A right-hand point with lined-up walls — friendlier than Jardim and Paul, still high quality. The first stop when bigger spots are out of control.

    Intermediate+
  • Fajã da Areia

A pebble-and-sand beach break on the north coast — the back-up plan when the south is flat. Picks up summer swells the south coast doesn't see.

    All
  • Porto da Cruz

Iconic black-sand bay under the Penha de Águia rock. Multiple peaks, mid-power waves, and an open feel — a great session and a great photograph.

    Intermediate
  • Machico

Nilton's home spot. Sheltered bay, forgiving whitewater, gentle take-offs — the place first-timers stand up. Year-round, with the busiest local crowd.

    Beginner
  • Ribeira da Janela

Far-west valley spot. Long, powerful left-hand point that lights up on solid NW swells. Exposed and committing — advanced surfers only.

    Advanced
  • Contreiras

Hidden gem with quality right-hand walls. Works in a narrow swell window; the tight take-off keeps the crowd small. Advanced surfers only.

    Advanced
  • Praia do Seixal

North-coast black-sand bay. Sheltered take-offs and forgiving whitewater — a friendlier alternative when Machico is crowded.

  • "Best surf trip I've taken. Nilton knew exactly which spot would be working that day, every day — and he reads waves better than anyone I've paddled out with."

  • "I'd never surfed a real point break before this week. Nilton put me on Ponta Pequena on a perfect day and talked me into the wave I'd have backed off from alone."

    Sample Reviewer · Berlin
  • "Came as a beginner, left able to read a forecast on my own and ride green waves in Machico. Calm, patient, never any pressure."

  • What level do I need to be?

Every level — beginner, intermediate, advanced. The methodology is the same regardless: read the conditions, pick the right spot for your level, work on technique that actually moves you forward. Beginners surf forgiving sand-bottom waves at Machico; intermediates and advanced surfers head to the south-coast points when conditions line up. The session is built around you, not the other way around.

  • How is this different from a regular surf school?

A traditional surf school is built around delivering lessons at scale — usually group lessons, fixed times, beginner-focused, often at the same beach regardless of conditions. Madeira Surf Progress is built around progression. Private or near-private coaching, forecast-driven scheduling, spot selection based on the day's conditions and your specific goals. Every booking is shaped around moving you forward, not filling a class.

  • How do I know if a 1-Week or 2-Week programme is right for me?

The 1-Week programme is the right call if you want serious, structured progression in a defined window — daily coaching, daily surfing, focused work on technique and ocean reading. The 2-Week Intensive Camp goes further: it's an application-based, performance-led programme designed for surfers who want transformation, not improvement. If you're not sure, send a message — we'll talk through your level and goals and recommend the right fit.

  • How does scheduling work?

Sessions are forecast-driven, not fixed. Once your booking is confirmed, we lock approximate dates; the exact spot and time get confirmed 24–48 hours ahead based on the swell window. No fixed schedule means no wasted sessions — only days when there's something worth surfing.

  • Do I need to bring my own board?

Boards and wetsuits are included with every session. If you'd rather bring your own quiver, that works too — we'll meet at the spot.

  • What about transport?

Pick-up and drop-off from your accommodation are available across the south coast and Funchal. North-coast pickups are arranged case by case depending on conditions and where the swell is working that day.

  • What if there's no swell during my visit?

If conditions are completely flat, we either reschedule, switch to a coastal walk and spot-knowledge tour, or refund the session. You don't pay to surf nothing.

  • Is Madeira a good destination for first-time surfers?

For absolute beginners, yes — at Machico bay, where the bottom is sandy and the waves are forgiving. The south-coast point breaks and rock breaks elsewhere on the island are advanced-only. Madeira's reputation as a serious surf destination comes from those advanced waves, but Machico keeps it accessible for anyone learning.

  • How do I pay?

Bank transfer or in person on the day, depending on your stay length and the programme you book. We'll agree the method when we confirm.

Send a message and you'll get a reply with availability and a swell forecast for your dates.
